Sadly, like many colleagues, I wasn’t called to speak in the debate in Parliament today about the events in Afghanistan.

However, I sat in the House of Commons and heard some incredibly powerful speeches by MPs on all sides about the harrowing plight of the Afghan people.

It is absolutely right that Britain’s fateful exit from the country and the resulting collapse of the Afghan Government was scrutinised.

Now though, we must assess whether we have the ability to put in place a fast-track settlement programme to immediately process Afghan refugees. We must analyse what levers we have to hold the new Taliban regime to account, particularly in terms of international human rights standards, as they seek global acceptance as a legitimate Government.
