Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has proposed some welcome changes to the congestion charge.
The Mayor’s proposed changes include:
- Reducing hours to 7am-6pm weekdays and 12-6pm weekends
- Removing evening charges to support London’s culture, hospitality and night-time businesses
- Reopening applications for the 90% residents’ discount
Shadow Transport Minister, Sam Tarry, said:
Throughout this pandemic the Government has played political games with TfL’s funding and continues to have them over a barrel financially, and previously forced them to increase the congestion charge as a condition of their bailout.
However, it is welcome news that Mayor Sadiq Khan is now scrapping the charge in the evenings, which will be a much-needed shot in the arm for our night-time economy as it emerges from this pandemic, as well as encouraging people to use our world-class public transport network and helping to cut emissions across the capital.
